PARISH BULLETIN
February 18, 2007
Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

Greetings on this Sunday before Ash Wednesday! It is my pleasure to give you the promised feedback on the results of the 100+ interviews which members of the Social Concerns group have been doing over the past several months. Rather than have the 12 of us determine what direction the group would take, we wanted to ask a good sampling of parishioners what you saw as major concerns, both locally and globally. We interviewed a wide range of parishioners of various ages and lengths of time in the parish, very involved folks and not quite so involved folks. We kept good notes on who said what and, once we reached our goal, collated the responses.

Rather than dissipate our energies in many directions, we will focus on three of the main areas you expressed as your major concerns. We chose two areas of local concern. Three of our members, Josie Mercado, Barbara Rudometkin and Jim Kelly, will be researching universal health care, especially for the poor and elderly in our city and county. Hilda Barradas, Yvette Kinchen, Michael Salazar, Tracey Jones and Kerry Hansell will be gathering information about youth violence, gangs and opportunities for our young people. Three of us, Maureen Mitchell, Danielle Katches and myself, will be working on the global issue of peace in Iraq, ending the war there and bringing the troops home.

Over the next few months, we will be speaking to many of the parish groups to answer your questions and elicit your support. If you don’t belong to a group, please feel free to contact any of us or stop us after Mass to get more information. We see ourselves as the yeast in the dough and hope to raise everyone’s awareness about these important issues you have raised! We will be doing research, for starters, and would be happy for anyone’s assistance. We will keep you informed and invite you to participate in whatever way you are able. Please support our efforts with your prayers.

On Sunday, March 18, we will host an interfaith prayer service for peace here at 2 pm.

Please mark your calendar and plan to join us.

Peace, Sister Sheral

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

On February 15th, we received the following thank you letter addressed to the people of St. Robert’s:

We, at the San Mateo County AIDS Program, want to express our sincere gratefulness for your donation of food to our Drop-In Center clients. We are very aware of the time and work you put into baking and cooking; it is obvious you put a lot of care and love into it. Our clients often tell me how much it means that there are persons like you, out in the community, who care. Again, thank you for your dedicated service, and I wish you all a blessed and prosperous year.

Signed:
Ginny Warnes, Volunteer Coordinator.

FESTIVAL NEWS

This year's festival dates are
September 21st, 22nd and 23rd

LENTEN DISCIPLINES

Abstinence
Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on ASH WEDNESDAY, the Fridays of LENT and GOOD FRIDAY.

Fast
Everyone 18 years of age and older but under the age of 60 is also bound to fast on ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY

On these 2 days, the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.

When health or ability to work would be serious affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS AND SOUP SUPPERS

All are invited to the Church for Stations at 6:00 pm each Friday during Lent. After this time of reflection and prayer, we will go to Hennessy Hall to share a sacrificial meal of soup. salad, bread and fruit. We ask that you give what you would have spent on your Friday dinner to our St. Vincent de Paul Society. They will use it to provide food to our sisters and brothers in need. There will be a basket for your donation on the serving table. We come together for:

Prayer—Stations of the Cross
Fasting and Abstinence—a light meal
Almsgiving—a donation to St. Vincent de Paul

The Stations on Friday, February 23rd “Through the Eyes of Mary”, will be led by Gene and Anna May. The Men’s Club will host this supper.

LENT
The Season of Giving

The Children’s Liturgy Team is kindly requesting donations of non-perishable food items for San Bruno Catholic Worker House during the season of Lent. Baskets will be placed in both Little and Middle Church and any donations you and your child would like to make may be placed there. Children may also bring them to Little and Middle Church on Sundays as part of our Lenten season of giving. We thank you most sincerely for helping us to remember those who are truly in need our help.

ON ASH WEDNESDAY

There will be fliers in the pews with information about the Mass schedule, preparation for the sacraments and other services the parish offers, aimed at those who come to Mass occasionally. If you are a “regular,” please take one of the fliers and give it to a neighbor or co-worker who might find it helpful. Thank you.

The readings today speak of radical forgiveness, not a topic we hear much about these days. In the reading from Samuel, we hear of David sparing Saul’s life which, out of context, doesn’t seem unusual. Except that Saul was insanely jealous of David’s military prowess and popularity among the people and had been trying to kill him. And the reason why David spares his life is clear: in spite of Saul’s violence towards him, David believes that Saul is “the Lord’s anointed” and, therefore, that he must not harm him.

In the gospel, we hear more of the Sermon on the Plain and Jesus again, challenges his listeners and ourselves: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you...Love your enemies and do good to them…Be merciful just as your Father is merciful…Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.”

Are you holding a grudge against someone? Here is your invitation. Have you given someone else reason to be upset with you? Here is a chance to apologize. I had an experience last month when we were out to dinner celebrating the birthday of one of the sisters I live with. She made an impatient comment as I was figuring out the tip, to which I responded angrily, embarrassing her. And she was the birthday person! I made a half-hearted apology out of a sense of obligation when we arrived home. Then while I was thinking about our interchange, I realized how resistant I was to really apologize. Granted, it was a small thing and she is surely not my “enemy” in any sense of the word. Is it the humility required that makes it so easy to NOT apologize when we’ve said or done something thoughtless or stupid? Do we excuse ourselves saying “It wasn’t that big a deal”? Pondering the wonderful quality of our relationship and not wanting to harm that, I apologized sincerely the next morning.

May we look towards Lent, practicing the forgiveness we seek from the Lord!

Peace, S. Sheral
