PARISH BULLETIN
November 12, 2006
32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

Today’s gospel urges us to ask the question of the day: “Who is actually poor in the parable?” Is it the scribes and the wealthy or the widow? It would appear that the widow is the one who is poor. With her husband gone, she has no one to support her financially. The widow is on the brink of begging to survive. She gives away to the treasury her last two small copper coins worth only a few cents. The crowd who witnessed this must have thought that she was crazy. They were probably thinking what is she going to do now. How is she going to live? How is she going to survive?

Those who gave to the treasury gave much more than the widow. The amount that they gave isn’t going to put them in the poor house. They have plenty of money to live on. They don’t have to worry about their next meal or wonder if they can afford to buy an extra pair of sandals. They are living large. Money isn’t a concern or issue for them. How blessed they are or perhaps not.

Jesus tells this wonderful parable to remind the crowd and us what true wealth is all about. Jesus’ notion of wealth is countercultural. He goes against the grain when it comes to living in this secular world. The way of Christ is not the way of the world. Being rich is not a matter of money even though our society dictates that it is. In Jesus’ mind, true wealth is having faith.

Faith enriches one. Faith in God is true and lasting wealth. Faith empowers one to give from one’s want. Faith inspires one to give generously. Faith empowers one to give unconditionally from the heart. The poor widow gave from her want, not from her surplus. After giving away her two small copper coins, she had nothing left. This act of faith demonstrates the rich widow’s absolute trust in God for her existence. In living her life, the rich widow totally relies and depends upon God.

Those who gave from their surplus are actually the ones who are poor. Even though they may have worldly wealth, they have no faith. Giving from their want indicates a lack of faith in God. The scribes and wealthy rely totally upon themselves and their wealth to live. Trusting in God for one’s existence like the rich widow is a sign of faith. Having no faith in God is what makes one poor. Wealth does not last forever. It eventually runs out. Faith stays forever. Faith makes one rich beyond imagination. Jesus wants us to live richly.

Fr. Paul

As a Parish Community we pray …....that we will help the oppressed, free the captives, console the sorrowing, feed the hungry, give shelter to the weak and, in all that we do, share in the sacrifice and victory of the cross.

Our sincere sympathy to the families of

Dear Parishioners

We continue to ask each week that parishioners pray for the chronically ill of our parish. If you have a friend or loved one in need of our parish prayers please call the Rectory at 589-2800.

Also, please remember our Emergency prayer network that prays for specific intentions that require a concerted effort due to their critical nature. To facilitate the network, please call Michele Pipinich. The network people then pray frequently for the next 72 hours. We would appreciate a return call with the outcome so we can praise God for His faithfulness.

RENEWAL OF VOWS
November 18th

Celebrate with us at the 4:30 pm Mass on Saturday, November 18th. Our Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary will renew their vows. We thank them for their many years of devoted service to our parish family and for their faithfulness and love for God and for His people.

Saint Roberts Church Library

Spiritual Reading will be available at St. Robert’s after the Masses on Sundays. Please take a few minutes either before or after Mass and check out a book or two that interest you. You may keep the books until you have them read. We have some books on the Library cart but we have many more in the Library/Reconciliation room.

ANNUAL THANKSGIVING MASS

The annual Thanksgiving Mass for the divorced and separated Catholics of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, and their families, will take place on Saturday, November 25th at 5:30 p.m. at St. John of God Church, 5th Avenue and Irving Street in San Francisco. A reception will follow. For information contact Father Al Grosskopf, S.J. (415) 422-6698 or Susan Fox (415) 752-1308.

THANKSGIVING FOOD BASKETS

In this season thanksgiving to our God, Who has blessed us with such abundance, we bring to your attention the food baskets that are on the altar steps. Please bring non-perishable food to help our sisters and brothers who find it hard to get by due to illness or job-loss. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society will distribute your gifts to those within our Parish family who are in need. Some suggestions are: cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, canned yams, canned Turkey gravy, instant mashed potatoes, peanut butter, jam, tuna, pasta and pasta sauce, canned vegetables and fruit.

Turkey gift certificates are also needed.

HONORING OUR VETERANS WHILE PURSUING PEACE

As the Veterans for Peace declare, “We, having dutifully served our nation, do hereby affirm our greater responsibility to serve the cause of world peace. To this end we will work with others towards increasing public awareness of the costs of war; to restrain our government from intervening overtly and covertly, in the internal affairs of other nations; to end the arms race and to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons; to seek justice for veterans and victims of war; to abolish war as an instrument of national policy. We know the consequences of American foreign policy because once, so many of us carried it out. We find it sad that war seems so delightful, so often to those that have no knowledge of it. We will proudly and patriotically, continue to denounce war despite whatever misguided sense of euphoria supports it.” wwwveteransforpeace.org.

As we mark Veterans’ Day, let us pray for those who have died or returned from war, wounded in spirit and body. Let us pray for their families who have to make such major adjustments in their everyday lives.

LUKE: THE GOSPEL PROCLAIMED

Michael Reardon makes the gospel come alive as he truly proclaims it at St. Bartholomew Church, 300 Alameda de las Pulgas, San Mateo at 7 pm, Monday, November 27. Once Advent comes, the readings will be from Luke's gospel, so it would be wonderful to hear this gospel dramatically proclaimed.

CROSS INTERNATIONAL CATHOLIC OUTREACH
THIS WEEKEND

Under the direction of its chairman, Bishop Sam Jacobs, Cross International Catholic Outreach is working to establish a stronger spiritual relationship between America’s Catholic parishes and the counterparts over seas-with the ultimate goal of helping the poorest of the poor.

This weekend we welcome Rev. Alfred Pecaric, who comes to us on behalf of Cross International Catholic Outreach. Parishes in underdeveloped countries represent more than an important source of spiritual truth for their community. They also stand as a beacon of hope for impoverished families who have nowhere else to turn for help. Hear how we can make a difference in the lives of our least brothers and sisters in the Third World.

SCRIP NEWS

Gift certificates will be sold next Sunday after all the masses. Plan ahead to purchase these as Christmas gifts. We have over 200 stores that can be ordered in different denominations, for friends, relatives or co-workers. Our school and church benefit in a big way.

BLOOD DRIVE A SUCCESS!

34 pints of blood were donated last Sunday.
Our goal was 30 pints.
Special thanks to all who participated in sharing this gift of life.

The Widow’s Mite
The widow in the first reading gives Elijah the prophet what little she has for her son and herself and is rewarded for her generosity. In the gospel, we hear the familiar story of the widow praised for contributing to the temple from the pittance she had. Jesus, obviously very moved by this action, calls the disciples over and points it out to them. Who knows what happened to this widow? Did she die, her house having been “devoured” by the unscrupulous scribes, leaving her homeless in her poverty?

We do have a unique opportunity to relieve some of the suffering of the poor with Christmas approaching. What if we let our families and friends know that instead of buying something we REALLY don’t need, we’d appreciate a donation in our name to some group working with the poor? San Bruno Catholic Worker, St. Vincent DePaul, the parish we help in Biloxi, Mississippi or your own favorite charity would be grateful recipients. If we’d like them to reach out further, they could go to www.heifer.org to donate animals such as chickens or rabbits, making a huge difference in the lives of distant villagers or to www.crs.org for Catholic Relief Services which assists desperate Haitians, Pakistanis, Palestinians, Lebanese and the poor of most African countries. We could involve our children and grandchildren as well, giving them one present and asking them to choose the group they’d like to receive donaions in their name as well. What encouragement for their natural generosity!

The second collection next Sunday benefits the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the effort of our U.S. bishops to break the cycle of poverty through empowering poor and low-income people to help themselves. All the money raised in the archdiocese, with the exception of overhead, goes to projects in our archdiocese.

Peace, S. Sheral
