PARISH BULLETIN
March 30, 2003
Fourth Sunday of Lent

but_pacm.gif (4092 bytes)

Dear Parishioners:

Recently I had a conversation with a parishioner who shared with me a great yearning to be filled with God's love. As I listened I began to think that there is a great need for all of us, myself included, to better nourish the spiritual dimension of our lives. The challenge is to find time to do so. We live in a world filled with activity and rush, and yet there is nothing wrong with that. Activity and everyday endeavors can be very healthy because this is where God is. It is out of this very nitty gritty and whirlwind life that our spiritual growth can happen. Lent is a good time to stop and look where we are on the spiritual journey. The gospels are filled with images of lost treasures being found. These treasures are worth seeking. To find them we need to discipline ourselves to pray and bring those lost treasures back home to our hearts, and to our world hungering for compassion, justice, and peace.

Singing at Mass

Let's look a little more at singing during Mass and what some of the norms are. The Sacred Constitution on the Liturgy which I wrote about two weeks ago makes some strong statements about the importance of music to our common worship:

The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as a combination of sacred music and words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy...

Therefore sacred music is to be considered the more holy, the more closely connected it is with the liturgical action, whether making prayer more pleasing, promoting unity of minds, or conferring greater solemnity upon the sacred rites. (Sacred Constitution on the Liturgy, #112)

A key phrase in those paragraphs is "it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy." Whether we like it or not, music is essential to the current form of the Sunday or feast day liturgy. How much or how little music and where we use it is for our next discussion. P. V.-K.

ARCHBISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL

The annual budget for the services and programs of the Archdiocese is over $10 million. Over half of this amount comes from the Annual Appeal. Each parish of the Archdiocese is assessed a fair share based upon the income and size of the parish. The goal for St. Robert's Parish is $80,200. We are responsible for the full amount so, if we fall short, it will be necessary for us to make up the amount from the regular collections of the Parish. The services and programs provided by the Archdiocese, from the weekly newspaper to support for the training of future priests, are extremely helpful to our Parish. I ask you to please help us in reaching the goal. Whether you can donate a small amount or a large, it will show that you are committed to St. Robert's and to the Church of the San Francisco Archdiocese. Join the 258 families who have already given and h help us to reach our goal.

Goal is $80,200
