Presentation of the Lord

but_pacm.gif (4092 bytes)

Dear Friends,

We have found a relaxing way to bring our reading of the Scripture to life - - putting ourselves in that time and place. Today we celebrate the Presentation of the Lord. Together we imagined what went on in Mary's mind and heart as she and Joseph carried Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. Simeon and Anna greeted them with joyful words of welcome. They were amazed by Simeon's prophetic words about their baby. Then Simeon spoke those dreadful words:

"A sword of grief your soul shall pierce!"
What did you feel, Mary, we asked?

Perhaps she might say to us:

"At first, I was filled with joy. Anna and Simeon had recognized my Jesus. My heart soared higher than the two pigeons could fly. Then Simeon looked deeply into my eyes and proclaimed those prophetic words. It was as if someone had shot a searing arrow into my heart. I felt apprehension, fear, anxiety. Joseph put his arm around me and said: `Don't worry, Mary. God is with you just as the angel told you. All will be well; all will be His will'. I felt calm sweeping over me. I took Jesus from Simeon; held Him close and told Him how much I love Him. Often I pondered Simeon's words in my heart and often I renewed my trust in God, Our Father."

We present ourselves to God each time we come together to celebrate the Eucharist. We come joyfully sometime and sometimes in sorrow; but we do come. May our eyes see the Light of Christ. May we experience His unending love. May we, like Mary, take the risk of loving Him and one another.

Sincerely,
Gene and Anna May

Holy Communion

This weekend we work through the last stage of our "liturgical update." The instruction is this:

Each person receiving Holy Communion is to bow his or her head before receiving the Host and again before receiving from the Cup.

The call to make such a gesture is, again, an effort to make our practice more uniform. Over the past 30 years, since we have largely made a movement away from receiving Communion while kneeling at a communion rail, many people have still felt a need to make some sign of reverence before receiving Communion. The bishops are offering a common practice for us all. To kneel or genuflect while receiving Communion is no longer necessary nor appropriate.

At St. Robert's, we are encouraging all to make the simple bow of the head while the person ahead of us in the Communion procession is receiving. Then, we can easily step forward to receive by hand or on the tongue. P. V.-K.
