Dear Parishioners:

I hope you have had the opportunity this summer to witness God’s beautiful creativity in nature. Sometimes in the beauty of nature, when I’m still, I can hear God speaking to me. I would like to share with you a prayer I recently read. It helped me to become more aware of God’s presence.

God of the universe, you speak
to us in all of creation, but you
call to us most surely in the
depths of our hearts. Help us
to listen for your voice today,
gentling our work, our recreation,
and our relationships with others
in ways that let us hear you. Deepen
in us our faith in your presence to us.
Help us, like the prophets of old, to
listen with sincerity and truth.

Are your ears ringing? Is God calling? Are you listening?
Deacon Duffey

What Makes a Celebration?

Amazing!! I just got off the phone with a friend who was telling me, "Lately, I’m just not getting anything out of Mass." (That’s what I’ve been writing about for the past few weeks.)

I said, "What would you like to get out of Mass?"

"I think I’d like to feel spiritually energized," said my friend.

Fair enough. It’s very reasonable that we expect to be touched by the Spirit and fed in the celebration of the Eucharist. There are no easy answers to why this doesn’t happen because there are many elements that go into the celebration of Mass, and if one of them is missing, it can be rough going. Our own U. S. bishops wrote back in 1968, "Faith grows when it is well expressed in celebration. Good celebrations foster and nourish faith. Poor celebrations may weaken and destroy it" (Music in Catholic Worship (MCW), 6).

All of us need to take responsibility for making our celebrations good—celebrations that foster and nourish our faith. Perhaps we should listen to the U.S. bishops again:

We are celebrating when we involve ourselves meaningfully in the thoughts, words, songs, and gestures of the worshiping community — when everything we do is wholehearted and authentic for us — when we mean the words and want to do what is done (MCW, 3). - Pat Kelly
