THE ARTS

Our students are exposed to various artistic mediums. Field trips to plays, museums, and symphonies expand their knowledge and appreciation of the fine Arts.

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA

A yearly Women's Guild event for the children of the Parish. Children are invited to meet Santa and have a memorable morning. The breakfast consists of fresh fruit, doughnuts, muffins, juice, hot chocolate, and coffee. Santa will present each child with a gift and for those too shy, the gift will be given by one of the student elves. The cost per person is $5.00 (children under 18 months are free).

Optional pictures with Santa are $2.00 each.

There will also be a "workshop of gifts" for children to shop and buy gifts for family members and friends. All gifts are inexpensive and will be wrapped and tagged for easy gift giving.

There are two breakfast sittings: 8:30am and 10:30 am. Choose one to fit your schedule. Reservations are a must.

HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

In September, 1949, the first and, to date, only Catholic School in San Bruno became a reality as the Pastor of St. Bruno, Reverend Pater E. Doyle, welcomed the students for grades 1 through 4 to what was then known as St. Bruno School. The faculty consisted of three Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi from Wisconsin and one lay teacher. The first principal was Sister M. Bernadette. O.S.F. The site of the school was approximately one mile from the church on land purchased for future expansion. The Sisters lived in a neighborhood home until the convent next to the school was completed in 1950. In the next four years, the staff of sisters increased to encompass all eight grades. Although a Kindergarten room was included in the building, it was never used as such until September, 1985, when the first Kindergarten class began.

In October, 1955, Reverend Robert J. Hennessy was appointed the administrator of the parish and, due to his supervision, a much needed second Catholic church and rectory were built on property adjoining the school and convent.

In November, 1958, St. Robert Parish was officially established, and Father Hennessy was appointed pastor. It was at this time that the name was changed to St. Robert School to incorporate all buildings into the new parish.

When it became necessary for the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi to leave California, the school went through a period of crisis in maintaining a complement of Sisters to balance the staff of lay teachers. In September, 1970, the parish and school welcomed the Sisters of the Presentation from Ireland. The Sisters of Presentation served the parish in administrative and teaching roles until 1995 when Mrs. Patricia Bordin was appointed as Principal. Then, the faculty consisted of all lay teachers with the exception of our part-time remedial teacher, who was a Sister of the Presentation. Ms. Yvonne Olcomendy assumed the roll as Principal in July 2004. In 2004 the faculty consisted of all lay teachers. Also, Sr. Mary is active as the Director of Religious Education (CCD).

The instructional program at St. Robert School has a solid Christian orientation and continues to aim for intellectual excellence in the spirit of Gospel values. These goals are realized through an effective partnership of parents and dedicated faculty and staff.

LANGUAGE ARTS

The language arts program is an integral part of the curriculum from Kindergarten through eighth grade. A variety of teaching methodologies is used to ensure that the students receive a strong background in phonics, spelling, vocabulary, comprehension, creative writing, literature, and basic English grammar.

MATHEMATICS

The mathematics curriculum begins with a firm foundation in pre-math skills with hands-on activities such as sorting, comparing, estimating and counting. Throughout the grades, this foundation is reinforced with basic computational skills and problem solving for everyday situations and culminates with an introduction to algebra.

MISSION STATEMENT

The students, faculty, staff, parents and community of St. Robert Catholic School are committed to creating a caring environment which fosters and implements a Christ-Centered and up-to-date academic program. Our vision is for all students to experience the rewards of positive self-esteem, self-discipline, respect for others and a true sense of community spirit as they develop their skills as responsible and effective world citizens.

MUSIC

Students in grades K - 5 are introduced to basic music theory, melodies, and rhythms by an experienced music teacher. Grades K - 3 use their musical skills to present the annual Advent Prayer Service. Students in Grades 4 - 5 learn instrumental Soprano Recorder. All students are exposed to both secular and spiritual music. Students in grades 6 - 8 have the elective to join the Chorus, learning more advanced melodies, rhythms and simple 2-part harmonies. The school choir (combined of the children's choir and chorus) sing annually at the Archdiocesan Choral Festival. Students in grades 1 - 8 are also invited to participate in the school's annual Talent Show.

PHILOSOPHY

We at St. Robert Catholic School acknowledge that we are called to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with the children who have been placed in our trust. Therefore, we, in cooperation with the parents, whom we consider the primary educators of our students, are dedicated to providing our children with a viable, complete, and comprehensive Catholic education.

This education enables our students to learn the message of our faith, whereby God reveals God's self to all people and unfolds the mystery of our salvation. We teach this message not as a lesson to be learned, but a lesson to be lived. We endeavor to provide our pupils with opportunities to develop a personal relationship with Christ. We understand our call to the ministry of education, and we seek to teach as Jesus taught.

Our education challenges our students to understand their roles as contributors to each community to which they belong. At St. Robert School, we teach community by experiencing it. We believe that the feeling of belonging to a community leads to a sense of service. Our education encourages our students to recognize their call to grow spiritually, intellectually, physically, psychologically, and socially so that through their personal growth they may better serve the members of God's family.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The children in the primary grades develop confidence in their physical abilities by participating in activities emphasizing coordination, balance and dexterity. This confidence is utilized by students in the upper grades where the focus is on fitness, health, and good sportsmanship. Instruction is given in baseball, basketball, volleyball, softball, football, group games, dance, and the President's Physical Fitness exercises. Students in grades 4-8 may also participate in organized sports on school-sponsored teams in the Peninsula Parish Schools League.

RELIGION

Instruction in the Catholic faith is the main focus of our curriculum. Fundamental Christian values are emphasized throughout the day in addition to formal religious instruction in Catholic beliefs. Students are also given regular opportunities to be actively involved in their Faith through liturgy preparation and participation and community service projects.

SCIENCE

The Children study science as a part of the curriculum from grades K-8. Students are given a variety of learning experiences in earth, physical, and biological sciences through which they develop the inquiry and critical thinking skills needed in all phases of their lives. Students in grades 3-8 experience a hands-on lab approach to science, and 6th grade students participate in a week of outdoor education.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The focus of our social studies curriculum is to foster an appreciation of the student's local environment as well as an understanding of the world's cultures, geography and history. Our program combines knowledge, skills and citizenship to provide integrated instruction, stressing the use of maps, graphs, and reference materials.

SPANISH

Conversational Spanish is taught in grades 7 and 8 to prepare students for participation in our interdependent world community.
