Dear Parishioners,

Thank you for your prayers for Father Marini. I am happy to say that he has returned to the priest house and is on the mend. Please pray for Sister Cabrini Riordan, P.B.V.M. who served so long at St. Robert’s. Sister is very sick and needs your prayers.

I am happy to report that the Parish Festival made $37,000 for the Parish. Congratulations to all who worked so hard to make it a great success despite the rain. $20,000 of the amount will be used to help the school keep the tuition as low as possible. $10,000 will be used to help construct the new entrance to the meeting room at the Convent (the old chapel). This room is used more and more - from RCIA to tutoring classes for the children. The new entrance on the north side of the building will make it more convenient for all and maintain the privacy of the convent itself. $5,000 will be used to keep the tuition of the Religious Education program at a reasonable rate. So thank you to all the workers and to all who contributed in any way.

With Father Marini’s injury, we will have to depend upon visiting priests more and more to help with Masses. You will become more familiar with Father Growney, S.J. from St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco. His brother lives in our Parish. Also helping, when he can, is Father John Koeplin, S.J., from the University of San Francisco. I do not know what we would do without their help. Thank them when you see them after Mass.

Sincerely,
Father Ring

MASS MUSINGS

Since the time change a couple of weeks ago we have been plunged into darkness in the evenings. And hasn’t the weather turned chilly? The signs of our Bay Area "Winter" are upon us. In the same way, the liturgical season of Advent is nearly upon us (it begins November 29th!). Its signs, symbols, and Scriptures give witness to the fact that when we find our lives or society in darkness, God provides a light for us. That light is Christ! Advent is a time of preparation for Christ’s Second Coming as well as for the celebration of Christmas. Let’s prepare for this season of preparation by considering how we can bring light to a dark place. Remember, Jesus told his disciples, "You are the light of the world!"

When we are really honest with ourselves, we must admit that our lives are all that really belong to us. So, it is how we use our lives that determines what kind of persons we are. It is my deepest belief that only by giving our lives do we find life. I am convinced that the truest act of courage, the strongest act of humanity is to sacrifice ourselves for others in a totally nonviolent struggle for justice. To be human is to suffer for others. God help us to be human.

HELPING PEOPLE HELP THEMSELVES

Next weekend we will participate in the special collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. For more than 28 years, this nationwide program has helped poor and low-income people help themselves. Each year the Campaign funds hundreds of projects that help low-income people work together to solve community problems, create jobs, and build affordable housing. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development gives us an opportunity to exercise our faith by helping people help themselves. Please give generously.
