Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend we celebrate the 40th anniversary of our Parish. Although the school had been founded in 1949, it was a part of St. Bruno’s Parish. (In fact, the statue over the front door is that of St. Bruno!).

As San Bruno continued to grow in population, Archbishop Mitty decided to divide the Parish with the new Parish being on the west side of El Camino. Father Hennessy who had been Administrator of St. Bruno’s was made Pastor of the new Parish. The Parish was given the name of St. Robert of the House of God. The school was incorporated into the new Parish. St. Robert was born in the year 1000 in France and became a Benedictine Abbot building many monasteries throughout France before his death in 1067. In September, we will have a major celebration of the 50th year of our school. Save September 4, 1999.

A clarification is needed in the Parish financial statement sent to you a few weeks ago. It should have been noted that the $29,000 given in second collection for the needs of the Church throughout the world and the $18,100 given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society for the needs of local people, should have been listed under income as well as under expenses. Sorry. I also want to mention the $69,000 given to the Annual Appeal of the Archdiocese. As I mentioned last week, any money that comes in above the assessment will come back to our Parish. So please continue your pledge payments.

I hope that all will try their best to add an extra dollar each week to the collection so that we can continue to meet our expenses. Congratulations for your continued generosity to the needy of our community and of our world.

Sincerely,
Father Ring

MASS MUSINGS

"Let us pray. . . " Why is the "Opening" Prayer at the end of the gathering rites? Because it is a collect, and it does just that. Our prayer from the Introductory Rites (including the Entrance Song, the Sign of the Cross, the Penitential Rite, and the Gloria) is brought to a culmination as we first pray silently and then as the priest speaks the words of the Opening Prayer. This is "quality time" for recalling our personal intentions for the Eucharist.

LETTER TO A YOUNG ACTIVIST

Do not depend on the hope of results.

When you are doing the sort of work you have taken on, essentially an apostolic work, you may have to face the fact that your work will be apparently worthless and even achieve no result at all, if not perhaps results opposite to what you expect.

As you get used to this idea, you start more and more to concentrate not on the results, but on the value, the rightness, the truth of the work itself.

And there too a great deal has to be gone through, as gradually you struggle less and less for an idea and more and more for specific people.

The range tends to narrow down, but it gets much more real. In the end, it is the reality of personal relationships that saves everything.

Thomas Merton

ADVENT LESSONS AND CAROLS

THANKSGIVING FOOD BASKETS

As we prepare to thank God for all good things, let our hearts go out to our sisters and brothers who are less fortunate. Baskets for your gifts of Non-Perishable food have been placed on the Altar steps. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society will see to it that those members of our Parish Family in need will be touched by our compassion and love.

ALTAR SOCIETY
Martha's of the Church

Have you wondered who works behind the scenes, taking care of so many details that make our liturgy run smoothly? Who washes and irons altar linens and servers’ robes? Who removes wax and polishes candleholders? Who dusts the altar, ambo, baptismal font? Who keeps the sanctuary clean and tidy? We are blessed with a group of lovely, faithful ladies who quietly take care of our center of worship. They are "The Martha’s". Their annual meeting will be on Tuesday morning, Nov. 10th. If you feel the desire to serve Jesus and His people as a "Martha", please call Gene or Anna May. Time commitment is 4-8 mornings each year.

We will be listing special anniversaries in our December Issue of Across the Parish. Please call the Parish office at 589-2800.
