Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

Every five years our school is evaluated for accreditation purposes by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The teachers and staff of the school have been working hard over the past year to prepare the school report. The visiting team of teachers from other schools has made its first visit and will do a few days of evaluation in February. Say a prayer that all will go well.

Thinking of the evaluation reminded me of a story, named THE LESSON. I think you will enjoy it.

Then Jesus took his disciples up to the mountain and gathering them around him, he taught them, saying:
          "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven;
          Blessed are the meek,......
          Blessed are they that mourn,.......
          Blessed are the merciful,.......
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,.......
Blessed are they that are persecuted,......
          Blessed are they who suffer,......"
Then Simon Peter said,
"Do we have to write this down?"
And Andrew said,
"Are we supposed to know this?"
And James said,
"Will we be tested on this?"
And Phillip said,
"What if we don’t know it?"
And Bartholomew said,
"Do we have to turn this in?"
And John said,
"The other disciples didn’t have to learn this."
And Matthew said,
"Can I go to the bathroom?"
And Judas said,
"What does this have to do with real life?"
And the other disciples likewise.

Then one of the Pharisees who was present asked to see Jesus’ lesson plan, and inquired of Jesus his terminal objectives in the cognitive domain.

And Jesus wept.

Sincerely,
Fr. Ring

PARISH MISSION WITH FR. TOM ALLENDER

For those of you who like to plan in advance—Mark your calendar now! Fr. Tom Allender, SJ, is returning to us to give a Parish Mission. He will preach at all Masses the weekend of February 21 & 22. As we prepare for the Third Millennium we’ll have an opportunity to nurture our faith and renew our commitment by participating in our Parish Mission. The Mission will take place the mornings of February 23, 24, 26, & 27 at 8:30 AM and evenings 7:30 PM. Baby-sitting will be available in Hennessy Hall. We all know people who no longer participate in Church events. Why not give someone a personal invitation to come to the Parish Mission with you. Ash Wednesday is the 25th. For those of you who plan at the last minute, there will be more info in the bulletin in February.

AS A PARISH COMMUNITY

We pray for the ill: Koret Koelman, Terry McLeod, Helen Miller, Cyndy Smerdel, Adela Florez, Ana Cosgaya, Tony Coogan, Bill Wilson, Peter Capodonicco, Rosemary McHale, Arthur Candia, and Margarita Velez .

We pray that all Christians together proclaim the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception until natural death.

SANCTITY OF LIFE

In his Encyclical "Evangelium Vitae", Pope John Paul II authoritatively confirms Catholic teaching on the value and inviolability of human life: "The deliberate decision to deprive an innocent human being of his life is always morally evil and can never be licit either as an end in itself or a means to a good end."

WORDS OF WISDOM

The happiest, sweetest, tenderest, homes are not those where there has been no sorrow, but those which have been overshadowed with grief, and where Christ's comfort was accepted.- J.R. Miller
