Dear Parishioners,

It goes with out saying that most people are familiar with the Beatitudes. In the gospel of Mathew, it is known as the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus goes up a mountain, sits down, and begins to teach his disciples his way of life. For the evangelist Mathew, Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament. He is greater than the prophet Moses who was given the Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai by God. The Beatitudes are Jesus’ version of the Ten Commandments. One could say that the Beatitudes are matters of the heart. Unlike the Ten Commandments, Jesus wants the Beatitudes to be received into our heart. For that is where true and lasting change takes place. In living the Beatitudes, one is transformed into a man or woman of God.

When the disciples listened to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, I cannot help but think that they must have been perplexed by his teaching. In teaching the Beatitudes, Jesus is turning their perspective of life upside down. He is altering their mindset. As human beings, it is only natural for us to expect, if not demand, a reward here and now. If one works hard, one expects some type of reward in this life. So many people live for the world and for themselves. The Beatitudes remind the disciples that their present way of thinking and living is contrary to the Kingdom of God.

Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount teaches his followers to think and live his way. Jesus taught what he lived in his life. People naturally think and believe that they have to be powerful, self reliant, and ruthless to get ahead. We live in a dog eat dog society. That is not the way of Christ. Christ was a suffering servant who did the will of God. Jesus emptied himself of his power and glory by becoming fully human. We see in the life of Christ his humility and his obedience to do God’s will. He was compassionate and forgiving toward sinners. Jesus was kind and gentle toward those who suffered from diseases and illnesses. He did not hesitate to reach out to help those who were the least in the world. Christ was unwavering in his commitment to fulfill his role in God’s plan of salvation for the whole world. He completely and totally depended upon God for everything.

Being human it is hard for us to be patient under any circumstance. It is difficult to wait for good things to come. Living the Beatitudes empowers us to live holy lives. The Beatitudes transform us to be a Christ to others. If we truly want to leave a legacy for people to be in awe of, then let us live out the Beatitudes with each new day.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS AND LENTEN SUPPERS

On each Friday during Lent (except for Good Friday), Stations will be held in the Church at 6pm. A light supper consisting of soup, salad, bread and fruit will follow in Hennessy Hall. This is an opportunity for us to pray together and for members of our parish family to get to know one another. Please put what you would have spent for your usual Friday dinner in the basket on the serving table. Your donation will allow our St. Vincent de Paul Society to bring food to our sisters and brothers who are in need. On Friday, February 8th, Gene and Anna May will lead the Stations. The Men’s Club will host the supper. Together we can practice the three Lenten observances which are:

PRAYER—STATIONS OF THE CROSS
FASTING AND ABSTINENCE—A LIGHT MEAL
ALMSGIVING—A DONATION TO ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

ASH WEDNESDAY
FEBRUARY 6TH

Ashes will be distributed at the
6:30 a.m. Communion Service and at
the 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. & 6p.m. Masses.

LENT BEGINS

During the season of Lent, the whole Christian community enters into a journey of conversion. “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel” we will hear as we receive the ashes during the 6:30 am Communion Service and the 8:30 am Mass, 10:30 am school Mass and 6 pm Mass. The three Lenten practices from earliest times are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are universal days of fast and abstinence in the Church. Fasting means that Catholics 18 to 59 years of age are expected to eat only one full meal and two other, smaller meals, not to equal a full meal. Catholics 14 and older are expected to abstain from meat (beef, poultry, pork) on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent. Let us enter into this holy season of grace, opening ourselves to God’s presence and praying for the catechumens and candidates preparing for the Easter sacraments.

If there's room today or someday:
Those who have more can make choices to use less, to share more, and to advocate for greater justice, so that all people have the resources to provide for themselves and their families. For all to have a place at the table, some of us may have to take a smaller place at the table. A Place at the Table, United States Catholic Conference of Bishops

“Blessed Are the Merciful”
This weekend, we hear the most well-known part of the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes. Among them is this one: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” Sometimes, the problems of our world seem so huge, we are tempted to throw up our hands in despair and say, “I can’t deal with it!” As Fr. Bill Justice reminded us last Sunday, Jesus’ life, death and resurrection give us hope in the midst of whatever trials we (or the world) are under going. It’s obvious that we at St. Robert’s are people of hope and would rather respond to the needs of our world. Our parishioners cannot be outdone in generosity, in the mercy shown to others! Every November, you give food for St. Vincent de Paul’s Thanksgiving baskets and mittens, scarves and slippers for Sr. Ita’s and Sr. Patricia’s homebound folks. During Advent, you participate wholeheartedly in the Giving Tree and the Family Giving Tree to help people in need referred by St. Bruno Catholic Worker, San Mateo Catholic Charities and St. Thomas Parish, Long Beach, Mississippi.

This Lent, we invite you to extend the reach of your charity even further. You may have heard that in the year 2000, the developed nations of the world agreed upon 8 goals for the new millennium. One of these Millennium Goals was to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. 3,000 children die of malaria each day, primarily in African countries. For $10 each, pesticide-treated nets can be made locally and transported to the people who are then instructed in their proper use. The net not only prevents those within it from being bitten, but also kills the malaria-carrying mosquitoes which fly into it.

The Social Concerns group will be spearheading this parish-wide effort. Please feel free to talk with any of us if you have questions. Beginning next Sunday, blue envelopes in the pews will be available for your donation. Many of us still have the practice of fasting from something we really enjoy – like going to the movies or having desert - giving something up for Lent. You might want to put into the envelope the money you save each week and turn it in at the end of Lent. Or simply decide how much you’d like to give, write a check made out to St. Robert’s, enclose it in the envelope and put it in the regular collection. There will be short articles in the bulletin each week to keep this effort in our minds and hearts. The money donated will go to the Gates Foundation/ United Nations Funded effort which you can read about on www.NothingButNets.net. Nothing will be used for administrative expenses; every penny will go to getting the nets to the people who need them. Please feel free to look closely at the net and the photos within it. Thank you in advance for your help.

Have a blessed Lent! S. Sheral
