PARISH BULLETIN

Third Sunday of Lent

“Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all my being bless his holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all his benefits”
Psalm 103:1-2

Last week our Sunday Gospel Reading (Luke 9 28b-36) took us to the top of a very high mountain and there we experienced with Peter, James and John the transfiguration of Jesus. This was an experience far beyond their wildest imagination. This week we are down in the valley again visiting an orchard where the owner has planted a fig tree. The fig tree, for three years in a row, failed to produce any fruit, so the owner wanted it removed from his orchard. The gardener interceded for the tree and promised to cultivate and tend to it with the hope that it would start producing fruit and please the owner.

On Ash Wednesday we were like the Apostles on Mount Tabor filled with excitement and plans about what we would do for God this Lent. Saint Peter planned to build “three tents” - nothing was too much trouble or too great an undertaking for him at that point. We know that he never did accomplish what he promised to do! What about us? We are now three weeks into Lent and where are our resolutions.— “Our Tents”? Are we now depending on a kind hearted “gardener” to come along and bail us out—to give us more time, more loving care so that we can produce the fruits of the Spirit in our lives? At this mid-point of Lent let’s take a good hard look at our Lenten promises and hope that we are not found to be replicas of that barren fig tree!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day
Sister Patricia

Random Thoughts for Lent

This past week, I’ve been making arrangements with various church leaders regarding the Interfaith Prayer for Peace we’ll be hosting here next Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. The Thai Buddhist monks (whose monastery is just down the block) are coming as are the Jewish rabbi from Burlingame, the pastor from Peace Lutheran, and the leader of the United Muslim interfaith group. Other leaders of faith communities may be coming, but we haven’t heard from them yet. Please come and be with these other good folks as we listen together to readings from our various traditions, let their wisdom sink into us in prayerful quiet and beg our loving God for the change of heart which will open all people to his gift of peace. It won’t be long, I promise, and it will be one of the most fruitful actions we can do for our country and our world.

If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.

If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.

If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors.

If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.

If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.

-Lao-Tse, Chinese philosopher, 6th century BCE

Three weeks from today is Palm Sunday and the beginning of the week we call “holy.” Our services Thursday, Friday and Saturday are at 7:30 p.m. during the Triduum (“the three days”) and are worth marking on your calendar now. They will plunge you into the life, death and resurrection of Jesus as nothing else can.

Peace, S. Sheral
