PARISH BULLETIN
March 4, 2007
Second Sunday of Lent

Dear Parishioners

Thomas Merton, a Trappist Monk and renowned author, was standing in the center of a busy Louisville shopping district. He realized as he was looking around the secret beauty at the heart of each person. He called this the point of nothingness and of absolute poverty which is the glory of God revealed in each person. With that experience came Merton’s realization that all women and men are walking around “shining like the sun.”

The story of the Transfiguration in today’s gospel continues the Lenten invitation to draw into a deeper union with God. On the mountain, Jesus was transfigured; that is to say, the divine source of his human personality poured out through his body in the form of light. His face became dazzling as the sun. Even his clothes shared in the radiance of the inner glory.

We, too, are called to this kind of transfiguration. Through prayer and prayerful action , we can increasingly awaken to the presence of God’s glory within us and around us.

The apostles are good examples of our developing consciousness as we grow in faith. At first they were delighted with the vision of Christ in his glory. Their delight turned to terror when the implications of all this dawned on them. Only Jesus’ reassuring presence and touch were able to quiet them. They were ultimately calmed by the mysterious voice out of the cloud. Then they could act.

The eternal word of God is always speaking to us in our spirit. But caught up in the busyness of our lives and numbed by the noise of the world that swirls around us, we are often deaf to that quiet word of God spoken in our hearts. As we slow down, listen, become more attentive to the murmurings of our hearts, the inner word of God becomes more audible. It is then that the external words of scripture and the inner word of the heart becomes one.

It is in this state that the inner light of Christ shines through us to touch the world. We too experience transfiguration.

Father Bruce

Today we hear of two amazing incidents: God promising descendants and land to Abram, who is elderly and childless, and Jesus being transfigured before Peter, James and John. Abram, later called Abraham, is open to the Lord God’s dialogue with him and “put his faith in the Lord.” He has had encounters with God before, so his faith is not blind, but based on experience. He will stake his life on God’s promise, trusting in the covenant which God has initiated.

God blesses the three closest to Jesus with a glimpse of his divinity as he speaks with Moses and Elijah, two giants of their Jewish faith, about the “exodus” he would accomplish in Jerusalem. [We who had religion or catechism classes as children might remember Moses leading the Israelites in their exodus or passage from Egyptian slavery. On Holy Saturday night, we will hear the story again, this time related to Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection which leads the catechumens and ourselves from sin and death to new life through the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) and renewed commitment.]

The three are overwhelmed and fascinated, awakening from sleep to see such a sight! We who read or hear these words in our time are reminded of Jesus’ resurrection appearances as well, but they had no such foreknowledge. Peter in his inimitable style wants to build tents for everyone, so that they can prolong this wondrous event! A cloud overshadows them and they hear a voice, “This is my chosen Son, listen to him.”Their fright silences them and they tell no one of their experience. Both Mark’s and Matthew’s communities have Jesus admonishing them not to tell anyone until “the Son of Man has risen from the dead.” (Mk 9.8; Mt. 17.9)

So, what about us? When have we had some sense of God’s presence with us, of God keeping the promise to be with us always? We, like the three good friends of Jesus, are still being told, “Listen to him.” Have we made some time for prayer during these Lenten days and nights? “Change our hearts,” we’ve sung, pleading with the Spirit to shape us into the people we are called to be, but we need to be present, to be at least a bit attentive so the Spirit can work. God has made us free, so we need to open our hearts to let the Spirit in. May we begin today!

Peace, S. Sheral
