PARISH BULLETIN
February 4, 2007
Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

The second reading this weekend, from St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, begins, “I am reminding you, brothers and sisters, of the gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in which you also stand”. How true that statement is for me in my relationship with you. For almost 17 years I have been blessed with the opportunity to share and reflect with you the gospel passages. Believe me that I have learned and witnessed God’s love through your actions more than you could possibly have experienced from mine. As we heard last week, God’s love does not run out and the demands on all of us to share the love God has given us, never ends as well.

Monsignor Bruce Dreier will be speaking this weekend about the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. As one who has benefited, through the Diaconate Program, I thank you for your donations in the past as well as the present. I personally know of many programs that your donations allow to continue. Thank you for your generosity.

The other event this weekend is our Blood Drive. If you can swing by the Hall on Sunday before 1:30 pm you can once again help our community. As I mentioned before, this is one of the greatest gifts we can give because we have no idea who the recipient will be. We are physically giving the gift of life to another person. May your reward be great in Heaven.

With sincere thanks,
Deacon Rusty Duffey

The Call of God

The readings today give us a sense of what happens when God calls someone. God appears to the prophet Isaiah in the temple in Jerusalem and he is overwhelmed by the holiness of God and his own sinfulness. He fears he will die because of the understanding at that time that no one sees God and lives. God in the person of Jesus appears to Peter in the midst of his everyday occupation. Peter is amazed at the miracle of the huge catch of fish– what carpenter knows where the fish are running? And, like Isaiah, he recognizes his sinfulness and tells Jesus to depart from him. Though hundreds of years elapse between the writing of Isaiah and that of Luke’s community, the pattern is the same: God (or Jesus) appears; the person is afraid because of his sinfulness; God (or an angel) takes away the sinfulness or assures the person; the person is invited to do something for God; the person says yes. We heard hints of the same pattern in Jeremiah’s call last weekend, though the passage left out his protestations of inadequacy.

What about each of us? Have we experienced God’s call in our lives? Are we now experiencing a call to do “something beautiful for God” as Mother Theresa put it? We’ll need to take a bit of time to let God find us in the busyness of our lives, but if we are the least bit open, the voice of God will get through. It may be something small, such as reaching out to a neighbor, especially one we may find difficult, or something bigger, such as choosing a different career that will be of more help to people, though it will bring in a much smaller salary.

Listen to your heart: In my awareness of an area of particular need, am I being asked by God to respond? To volunteer regularly. Perhaps, in a literacy program or with St. Vincent de Paul? Am I being called to give up some activity I enjoy to spend more time with my child who is struggling with math?

Evidently, the Spirit of God has been calling and many of you have responded by your generosity to the people of the Gulf region. Through donations and gift cards, you’ve helped the people of Long Beach, Mississippi and neighboring Gulfport ever since Hurricane Katrina struck Aug. 29, 2005. Please come to the hall next Sunday after the 9:30 am or the 11:30 am Mass to see what your goodness has provided for the people of St. Thomas Parish. Deacon John and I have a powerpoint presentation from our recent visit there and will be happy to answer questions.

Peace, S. Sheral
