PARISH BULLETIN
November 5, 2006
31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

It seems like only yesterday that my mom passed away. Actually it was March 2nd of this year. I thank the consolation ministry for their help, prayers and especially for the beautiful All Soul’s day memorial celebration.

It is hard to look around the church and see mom’s name on the wall. But at the same time it gives me great comfort. As I look at all the names listed, I see her name is among the many saints who made the journey to heaven through the doors of St. Robert’s. I am also reminded of many of the families with whom I helped plan their vigils and burial prayer services. The memories of stories shared of their loved ones has helped me and hopefully I have helped them as together we shared our grief.

There has been much sorrow this year, but also great joy and hope for everlasting life. May they all rest in the peace of Christ. May we who remember also be comforted with that same peace. On behalf of all whose family members are listed, we thank you for your prayers.

-- Deacon Duffey

As a Parish Community we pray …....for the family of nations. May we love our neighbors as ourselves by sharing all we have with those who are hungry, homeless, lonely and grieving.

WE CONGRATULATE THE NEWLY MARRIED

Paulynn Salazar & Rafael Ortiz

Our sincere sympathy to the family of
Hilda Martin
who died recently.

Dear Parishioners

We continue to ask each week that parishioners pray for the chronically ill of our parish. If you have a friend or loved one in need of our parish prayers please call the Rectory at 589-2800.

Also, please remember our Emergency prayer network that prays for specific intentions that require a concerted effort due to their critical nature. To facilitate the network, please call Michele Pipinich. The network people then pray frequently for the next 72 hours. We would appreciate a return call with the outcome so we can praise God for His faithfulness.

THANKSGIVING FOOD COLLECTION

As has been the tradition of St. Robert’s Parish for many years, during the months of November we show our thanks to our God for all He has given us by sharing what we have with our hungry sisters and brothers. Please bring non-perishable food items to the baskets placed on our altar steps. Some suggestions: stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, turkey gravy, yams, chicken broth, jams & jellies, spaghetti sauce and tomato sauces, soup, cereal, top ramen and instant mashed potatoes. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society will distribute your gifts

Turkey Gift Certificates are also needed.

Cross International Catholic Outreach
Next Weekend

Under the direction of its chairman, Bishop Sam Jacobs, Cross International Catholic Outreach is working to establish a stronger spiritual relationship between America’s Catholic parishes and the counterparts over seas-with the ultimate goal of helping the poorest of the poor.

Next weekend we welcome Rev. Alfred Pecaric who comes to us on behalf of Cross International Catholic Outreach. Parishes in underdeveloped countries represent more than an important source of spiritual truth for their community. They also stand as a beacon of hope for impoverished families who have nowhere else to turn for help. Come and hear how we can make a difference in the lives of our least brothers and sisters in the Third World.

TEACHING TOLERANCE

Following up from last week’s bulletin, here are the last five suggestions for helping children (and others) to be respectful and tolerant of differences.

6. Showcase diversity materials in your home; assess the diversity reflected in your home’s artwork, music and literature.

7. Create opportunities for children (and friends) to interact with people who are different from them.

8. Encourage children to call upon community resources; participate with them in activities involving people beyond their usual circle of acquaintances.

9. Be honest about differences. Don’t tell your children we’re all the same; we’re not. We experience the world in different ways and those experiences matter.

10. Model the behavior you would like to see; they will learn acceptance from witnessing your interactions. Taken from www.tolerance.org.

To Make Poverty History
There are 613 commandments in the Torah; no wonder the man is asking which is the greatest! Jesus responds with the Shema which we hear in the Deuteronomy reading and adds also from another chapter of Deuteronomy, “The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Six of us from the parish Social Concerns group participated in the Point Seven Now conference sponsored by the Archdiocese of San Francisco, Catholic Relief Service and the University of San Francisco, among others. The title of the conference comes from the promise of the United States government and those of many other wealthy countries in 2000 to give .7 % of our gross national product to development efforts for the poorest countries. (We’ve only given about .25% so far; thus the goal of the conference to get the Catholic community activated to encourage the fulfillment of the promise!)

To say that the speakers were outstanding would be an understatement. They came from India, Kenya, Brazil, Zambia, and Peru. Each told stories of specific people and their particular sufferings: a trafficked girl in India, tricked by the promise of a job; an eight-grade school in Zambia with only two teachers since there are no educational institutions due to crushing international debt payments; a family living on a garbage heap outside Brasilia, the mother feeding her children with the scraps she finds there. The most important message to me was that “the poor” are individual persons, each with a name, a culture and a story. And no one is so poor that he or she has nothing to share; no one so rich to be unable to receive. Our Social Concerns group will meet in two weeks to begin to discern how to share what we’ve learned with you.

Peace, S. Sheral
