PARISH BULLETIN
August 20, 2006
20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Friends:

I returned to Saint Robert’s on Thursday, August 11th. It was wonderful to be home. Each day of those five weeks away was filled with many new insights and unexpected encounters with people like yourselves: men and women of great kindness and charity.

My health has improved in two very significant ways. First, I have gained thirty-five pounds since April 1st. Secondly, through new medication and daily physical rehabilitation, my legs have been strengthened and my mobility dramatically improved so that I no longer need to use a cane. The pain is less severe and improves with daily exercise. I am now strong enough to continue treatments at Stanford Medical Center—chemotherapy and radiation. I feel more hopeful than I have all year.

Thank you for your many cards and messages of good-will, prayers and love. They have sustained me in more ways than you will ever know. Our scripture reading from Ephesians this Sunday teaches us that faith is never held in individual isolation. A fellowship is always involved. And I am glad for that, because I need it and so do you. Community increases our faith, a faith that nurtures a hope in those things yet unseen. Your faith has increased my own faith and hope and for that I am profoundly grateful. I offer this Eucharistic poem to you in gratitude.

Gold or silver I have not,
nor even photo with silly inscription.

But what I have I give to you.
Piecemeal, my heart is a pacel.

Take this morsel and
consume it as a sign of my
undying comradeship.

God love you, I do.

Father Joe

Dear Parishioners

We continue to ask each week that parishioners pray for the chronically ill of our parish. If you have a friend or loved one in need of our parish prayers please call the Rectory at 589-2800.

Also, please remember our Emergency prayer network that prays for specific intentions that require a concerted effort due to their critical nature. To facilitate the network, please call Michele Pipinich. The network people then pray frequently for the next 72 hours. We would appreciate a return call with the outcome so we can praise God for His faithfulness.

This week we pray for:
Theresa Cook, Karen Callicotte & Pat Schaukowitch

At this moment of a tenuous ceasefire in Lebanon, and with so many warring factions throughout the world, there seems nothing more important than to pray that God’s will for our human family be realized. During the Advent season, we hear of God’s dream for the world: the lion lying down with the lamb; swords being turned into plowshares; and God comforting his people and promising that their sorrow will be turned into joy. As we participate in this Eucharistic meal, we might consciously unite ourselves with Christians in Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza, Israel, Sudan, Sri Lanka and everywhere there is war. They eat the same Bread of Life and drink from the Cup of Salvation. Let us pray for all who have died and for their families who are in mourning. And let us pray for a change of heart for all who think that violence is the only way to solve disputes.
Peace, S. Sheral

A Prayer for the World
Let the rain come and wash away the ancient grudges, the bitter hatred held and nurtured over generations. Let the rain wash away the memory of the hurt, the neglect. Then let the sun come out and fill the sky with rainbows. Let the warmth of the sun heal us wherever we are broken. Let it burn away the fog so that we can see each other clearly, so that we can see beyond labels, beyond accents, gender or skin color. Let the warmth and brightness of the sun melt our selfishness, so that we can share the joys and feel the sorrows of our neighbors. And let the light of the sun be so strong that we will see all people as our neighbors. Let the earth, nourished by rain, bring forth flowers to surround us with beauty. And let the mountains teach our hearts to reach upward to heaven. Amen.
–Rabbi Harold S. Kushner

Sessions on Vatican II

The sessions on Vatican II, which will be given Tuesday mornings at 9:15 am and repeated Tuesday evenings at 7 pm, begin Sept 5. There is no charge, of course, but I would appreciate knowing who is coming, so that I can have the appropriate number of hand-outs available. Would you please go to www.saintroberts.org and register or call the rectory and leave your name?
