PARISH BULLETIN
June 18, 2006
The Body and Blood of Christ

Dear Parishioners,

The well known psychologist Meister Eckhart once said “if the only prayer you say in your whole life is Thank you that would suffice”.

As I reflect on the Parish celebration for me Sunday, June 11th, my heart is filled with gratitude to all of you parishioners and friends who came to share with at my “farewell” party. Though this will be my last year in active ministry at the parish I will continue to be around and hopefully will have more time to pray, reflect and connect with many old faithful friends.

Ministry at St. Roberts has been a wonderful experience. I am truly grateful for the opportunity I have had to serve as classroom teacher, Principal, and presently as Director of Religious Education. Each ministry experience brought its blessings and challenges. However, with the support of dedicated teachers and a wonderful secretary, Leslie Fong, Religious Education ministry has been rewarding and enriching.

Little did I know when I left Ireland in September 1970 to come on “mission” to San Bruno that I would have such a wonderful and blessed life. Initially I was assigned here for “one year” but that too changed. Now after 36 years in the U.S. with 24 of those years at St. Roberts I am mentally and physically ready to retire, but not to “fade into Sunset!”

Again my thanks to all of you especially to my sisters in community, Father Bruce, Parish Staff, Religious Education teachers, parents and students. Thanks for your support and your love.

Psalm 116:12-13 is a summation of how I feel at this time.

How shall I make a return to the Lord
For all the good he has done for me?

God Bless you,
Sister Mary

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY

If you haven’t filled out a card to have your father remembered in the Masses of this coming week, please do so today. Cards are in the vestibule.

Dear Parishioners

We continue to ask each week that parishioners pray for the chronically ill of our parish. If you have a friend or loved one in need of our parish prayers please call the Rectory at 589-2800.

Also, please remember our Emergency prayer network that prays for specific intentions that require a concerted effort due to their critical nature. To facilitate the network, please call Michele Pipinich. The network people then pray frequently for the next 72 hours. We would appreciate a return call with the outcome so we can praise God for His faithfulness.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL NEEDS YOU

"Jesus gives [his disciples] a simple, clear example of what discipleship is all about: service. Washing one another’s feet, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked- here is the core of the Eucharist, our great miracle of love…God’s table is large, as large as creation. All are invited, all are to have access to the necessity of food and the miracle of love." -

Bishop Robert F. Morneau, Ashes to Easter, p. 107-108

Café St. Vincent, the South San Francisco dining room of St. Vincent de Paul, desperately needs your help. Each Friday, St. Robert’s is responsible for preparing and serving the meal for the people in need who come. There is no minimum age limit: junior high and high schoolers are most welcome. Your help is especially needed during the summer, when some of the “regulars” are on vacation. Volunteers arrive at 9 am and finish around noon. Please call Carlo Noce or e-mail him at mcnoce56@comcast.net. Thanks very much

ANNUAL APPEAL

The Body and Blood of Christ
In the first reading, Moses uses blood to seal the covenant between the people and God. We may not be familiar with the word “covenant” but it is used frequently in the Hebrew scriptures. Each time the people broke the covenant by their infidelity, the leader again offered a blood sacrifice to renew the covenant with God. Because it was the sign of life, blood was used to ratify or renew that covenant. Gradually, the people learn that it is much more than a contract, which becomes null if either side breaks it. In passages written after this account from Exodus, God makes it clear to the community through the prophets that his covenant will last forever, regardless of what we, his chosen people, do.

Those of us who are older remember this feast as Corpus Christi. In those days, we spoke of the holy sacrifice of the Mass, perhaps overemphasizing its nature as a sacrifice and forgetting that the Eucharist actually took place during a meal. But today’s readings remind us of the blood of Jesus, the perfect sacrifice, who literally shed his blood out of love for us. At each Mass, during what is called the institution narrative, we hear the words, “This is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant.” Jesus’ offering of himself, once and for all, seals God’s covenant with us and ours with God. This is why each time we receive the Bread of Life and drink of the Cup of Salvation, it is important to say, “Amen” to that covenant. It is our free commitment to our relationship with our God and says that we are willing to take it seriously.

The priest also says “Do this in memory of me,” reminding himself and us that our receiving the Lord calls us to live as he lived, pouring out our lives for others. We already do this in many ways: through working long hours to support our families; babysitting the grandkids so our children can work; volunteering in efforts for the poor, the illiterate, the hungry. Perhaps, we would experience the deeper meaning of these actions if we consciously unite ourselves with Jesus’ sacrifice, asking him that we may make our sacrifices – small as they may seem - with as much love as he did.

Peace, S. Sheral
