PARISH BULLETIN
November 13, 2005
Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners;

“What can I return to the Lord for all the Lord has given to me”.

In this fourth week of reflections on Christian Stewardship we hear the parable of the good stewards. Two of the stewards returned what their master had given them with an increase. One steward returned just what the master had given him.

Over these past weeks we have focused on accepting God’s gifts graciously, cultivating these gifts and sharing them with others. This final week challenges us to consider what do we return to the Lord for all the Lord has given us.

Every parish relies on the generosity of its parishioners. The work of our parish is accomplished through our organizations, programs and our ministries as a community expression of our collective generosity. The Church in general ultimately depends on the generosity of individuals like you and me to support its charitable work. Our Church operates more schools and hospitals than any other religion. We feed more people, house more homeless people, provide more medical care and give more moral support to more people than any other organized group. All of this has a price tag. Each of us has a role to play; each of us has something to give.

God says “Try me in this”, and what he means is that if we try to out do Him in generosity, we cannot succeed. God loves us so much. God will continue to bless us.

Today we ask each family to commit to be greater stewards of the gifts God has entrusted to them. In our Spiritual lives what sacrifices can we make to take time each weeks for actively participation in Sunday Eucharist. With our time and talents what gifts can we bring to the Lord by participating in our parish organizations and ministries? Finally, can we increase our weekly offering to the Church? When was the last time we made an adjustment in the amount we return to continue the Lord’s work?

“As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10)

“The gift you have received, give as a gift.” (Matthew 10:8)

HOLIDAYS CONSOLATION MINISTRY

Surviving the Holidays when someone you loved has died

Saint Robert’s Grief Support Group will hold a special meeting on Saturday, November 19th in the Convent Chapel from 3-4:15 p.m. to help those who are facing the upcoming Holidays without their loved one-spouse, child, sibling, parent, grandparent, grandchild, friend, relative. The gap left by a loss is felt most poignantly during these traditional times of celebration-Thanksgiving and Christmas. We invite you to come and pray, share memories comfort and be comforted. May Our Lady of Sorrows comfort you.

Sister Patricia 589-0104.

Dear Parishioners

We continue to ask each week that parishioners pray for the chronically ill of our parish. If you have a friend or loved one in need of our parish prayers please call the Rectory at 589-2800.

Also, please remember our Emergency prayer network that prays for specific intentions that require a concerted effort due to their critical nature. To facilitate the network, please call Michele Pipinich. The network people then pray frequently for the next 72 hours. We would appreciate a return call with the outcome so we can praise God for His faithfulness.

Thank You

Our remembrance of our beloved dead on All Souls Day and throughout November is the fruit of many people’s work. Many thanks to Emil Ruggiero who lovingly printed the names of all who have died in the past year; to Kevin Imbimbo and the combined choirs of the 9:30 and 11:30 Masses for the prayerful music; and to Sr. Patricia and the Consolation Ministry for their presence, participation and the reception which followed Wednesday.

Rosa Parks
When Rosa Parks died, the world lost a wonderful person. In an article by Paul Rogat Loeb, “The Real Rosa Parks,” the author comments that “People like Rosa Parks shape our models of social commitment…And the conventional stripped-down retelling creates a standard so impossible to meet, it may actually make it harder for us to get involved.”

We have generally heard only that on one fateful day in 1955 when she was ordered to give up her seat (actually in the “colored” section of the bus) to a white man, she refused.

This was no spur-of- the-moment decision and she didn’t act as an isolated individual. She had been a member of the NAACP for twelve years, hesitant at first, then gaining confidence and serving as its secretary. The previous summer, she attended a ten-day training session at Tennessee’s labor and civil rights organizing school, the Highlander Center. E.D. Nixon who headed Montgomery’s NAACP mentored her, played a key role in the bus boycott, and got Martin Luther King, Jr. involved in the effort. JoAnn Robinson and her Women’s Political Council, distributed the initial leaflets following her arrest.

“This in no way diminishes the power and historical importance of her refusal to give up her seat. But it reminds us that this tremendously consequential act, along with everything that followed, depended on all the humble and frustrating work that she and others undertook earlier on. It also reminds us that her initial step of getting involved was just as courageous and critical as the stand on the bus.”

In our society which prizes instant gratification, her action is a reminder that “Change is the product of deliberate, incremental action, whereby we join together to try to shape a better world. Sometimes our struggles will fail, as did many earlier efforts of Rosa Parks, her peers and her predecessors. And at times they will trigger a miraculous outpouring of courage and heart – as happened with her arrest and all that followed. For only when we act despite all our uncertainties and doubts do we have the chance to shape history.” (Paul Rogat Loeb at www.commondreams.org.)

Maria Ida Gigiuente, who spoke to us Tuesday about Catholic Relief Service efforts for peace-building in Mindanao, related that it has taken seven years to resolve the conflicts among warring villages in a certain area of the island. May God grant us the patience to work (and pray) for the change we long to see!

Peace, S. Sheral
