Palm Sunday

Dear Parishioners,

The power of the spoken word. We all know how important it is to speak wisely, prudently, justly, lovingly. We have known the exhilaration, the joy the spoken word can bring...to tell another "I love you..." somehow makes real what has been perceived intangibly. The word spoken can also have the power to inflict hurt or cause division, we have all known this power of the spoken word as well.

In the Passion narrative of this Palm Sunday weekend, the disciples of Jesus openly speak in acknowledgment of their belief in him. They do this in the presence and hearing of the enemies of Jesus. When some of the Pharisees protest to Jesus he replies:

"...If they kept silent, the very stones would cry out."

It is comparatively easy to bear witness to Jesus here in church - we are among our own, speaking a word of faith here is like "...preaching to the choir." But our world, the world beyond the doors of St. Robert's, often needs to hear a word of hope —- and yes, a word of loving challenge.

Father Flor McCarthy puts it this way:

The stones will not speak out. Only humans can do that. Let us not remain silent when a word cries out to be said; a word of support in defense of someone who is being treated unjustly' a word of praise to someone whose contribution is being forgotten; or a word of truth where deliberate lies are being told.

It is often difficult to speak in faith, to profess with the word of our lips a truth which may be opposed. Like the disciples who in the Gospel today acclaim him in the streets —- we acclaim him here and now in the community of the church —- let us be careful not deny him in the marketplaces of our lives.

May the Savior and Lord strengthen us when we are inclined to be timid or weak, give us grace to bear witness to the Gospel with our very lives, and make our words faithful and true all the days of our days. To Christ be glory and honor in the Church today and always! AMEN.

Father Tom

Today's readings present Jesus' passion in a way we can relate to. He is the suffering servant, in the line of many prophets of Jewish history who were listened to by the few, persecuted by the many and ultimately, either killed or exiled. He is a human being, found threatening to others, especially those in power. He has grown into his identity as we all do, gradually, but his identity is as Son of God as well as son of Mary (and Joseph, in most people's eyes). He has spent all his adult life preaching about the reign of God, his Father's vision for the world wherein the poor would be blessed, the sorrowing comforted, the sick in body or spirit, healed. He has reminded his followers of the birds of the air and the lilies of the field and the care God shows for the (seemingly) most insignificant of his creatures. He has preached a day when all will have enough to eat at the banquet table of the Lord, where Pharisee and publican, Samaritan and Jew, woman and man are equal. He has known his Father's unbounded love and the faithful love of Mary and Joseph. His constant giving of himself, his healing of the sick, his telling the truth to those who hypocritically kept their religious duties, his amazing patience to the slow-learning disciples – his whole life has prepared him for this final, total laying down of his life. How could he refuse the ultimate sacrifice which his Father is asking of him? "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will, but yours be done."

Most of us turn away from suffering, avoid it at any cost. In our sympathy for him, we might think, "If I'd been there, I would have helped him in some way." If we are sincere, let us see Him suffering still in so many members of his Body. Let us help him there

If you found the Little Black Book helpful to your spiritual development during Lent, perhaps you'd like to continue the daily reflections throughout the 50 days of the Easter Season. I have ordered 200 of these booklets and will gladly give you one for a $1 donation. Hopefully, I'll have them by Easter Sunday; please check with me then.

GOOD FRIDAY

From the end of the first century, Christians have observed Fridays, and later the 40 days of Lent, as fast days in commemoration of the Passion of Jesus. Catholics share the great tradition of fasting along with all the worlds great religious traditions, Jewish, Muslim and the religions of the Far East. Fasting also reminds us also of our spiritual poverty and of the material poverty of most of the human race. It reminds us what it is like to be hungry and of our need to share what we have. This Lent let the symbolic gesture of fast and abstinence be a way for you to follow in the footsteps of Christ.

ABSTINENCE

Everyone fourteen years of age and older is bound to abstain GOOD FRIDAY.

FAST

Everyone eighteen years of age and older but under the age of sixty is also bound to fast on GOOD FRIDAY.

The law of fast allows one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.

ARCHBISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL

A NOTE FROM FATHER RING

The annual budget for the services and programs of the Archdiocese is over $10 million. Over half of this amount comes from the Archbishop's Annual Appeal. Each parish is assessed a fair share based upon the income and number of parishioners. The goal for St. Robert's Parish is $79,700. The services and programs provided by the Archdiocese are extremely helpful to our Parish. They range from legal advice to the training of future priests, deacons, and lay ministers. I ask you to please help us in reaching the goal. Whether you can donate a small amount or a large, it will show that you are committed to St. Robert's and to the Church of the San Francisco Archdiocese. Join the 289 families who have already given $63,150. Your help is needed!
