Third Sunday of Lent

Dear Parishioners,

Thank you to the dedicated women of the Guild who sponsored the wonderful Dinner-Dance last Saturday night. It was so good to see the friendships that have been formed here at St. Robert's and the willingness of everyone to help support the education programs of the Parish. If you missed it this year, make sure you plan to attend next year.

Our next big event will be a benefit for the Presentation Sisters who have served for so many years here at St. Roberts. All-young and old—are invited to a St. Patrick's Dinner Dance here at St. Robert's on Saturday, March 20th. Drinks will be at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7:30 p.m., Irish dancing will follow. This is a wonderful opportunity for all who have benefited from the work of the Sisters to come together to help them in their ministry.

Thank you to all who are helping with the Annual Appeal. It would be great if 800 individuals and families of the parish would help in this very good cause to provide financial help to keep many Archdiocesan ministries afloat. I guarantee you your money will not go to waste. Any money we receive over our goal of $79,700 will go to our own Parish to help with our local work. Make this cause your Lenten sacrifice.

Let's keep our prayers going for two parents of our school children who are fighting cancer. These battles can only be won by prayer, love and the skill of the medical profession. Let's do our part.

Sincerely,
Father Ring

CHILDREN'S LITURGY

Children's Liturgy will be holding Good Friday services for children 4 years and older. Doors will open in the auditorium at 1:15 p.m. We ask that you pick up your child immediately after the church services end. If you would like to pre-register your child, kindly call 589-2000 and leave your name, your child's name, age and phone number. Drop-ins at the door will be accepted.

To Change Our Hearts
I've just come from our weekly scripture group where we talked about many things. I found myself saying that our Lenten practice needs to be something which will open us to God's Spirit, so that the Spirit can change our hearts. All of us adults know that we really don't change ourselves; experiences, often difficult ones, change us; life changes us. And really only through the reflection we're forced to enter into afterwards. That's the Spirit of God at work, that Spirit personified as Lady Wisdom in the seventh chapter of the book of Wisdom: "intelligent, holy, incisive. a breath of the power of God..In each generation, she passes into holy souls, she makes them friends of God and prophets." (7.22,25,27)

What children do for Lent is another question, but giving up candy or sweets probably won't open us to the Spirit's action during these weeks of preparation for renewing our baptismal promises on Easter. During the 4:30 Mass this weekend, the Elect, those preparing for the Sacraments of Initiation at Easter Vigil, will participate in the first scrutiny. The word comes from a Latin word meaning "garbage." So we might ask ourselves, What "garbage" in my life needs to be "dumped," so that the Spirit can continue to change my heart? That question, each one of us needs to answer for ourselves. Take some time this week and ask for the wisdom to know what you need to do (or not do) these next three and a half weeks of Lent.

The Church Is Open
St. Robert's is open from before the 6:30 am Mass until 5pm. As you're going from work or school or are on your way to the park, why not come in and thank the Lord for the gift of life and the beauty of these days? God's peace will refresh you.

A Refugee Prayer

God, how can we comprehend?
Though we've seen them times before
Lines of people without end,
fleeing danger, want and war?
They seek safety anywhere,
hoping for a welcome hand!
Can we know the pain they bear?
Help us, Lord, to understand!
You put music in their souls;
now they struggle to survive.
You gave each one gifts and goals;
now they flee to stay alive.
God of outcasts, may we see
how you value everyone,
For each homeless refugee
is your daughter or your son.
Lord, you loving knows no bounds;
you have conquered death for all.
May we hear beyond our towns
to our distant neighbor's call.
Spirit, may our love increase;
may we reach to all your earth,
Till your whole world lives in peace;
till we see each person's worth.

This weekend the first of three Scrutinies will be celebrated at the 4:30 Mass on Saturday. The second Scrutiny will be celebrated next Sunday at the 9:30a.m. Mass with the third Scrutiny being celebrated on the following Sunday at the 5p.m. Mass. The reason for the varied Mass schedule is so that more parishioners may have the opportunity to meet our elect.

Scrutinies are special rites of preparation for those adults preparing for their Easter Sacraments. These adults, called elect, are expected to self-search and repent for whatever is weak, defective or sinful in their hearts. Through prayer and self-sacrifice they are expected to bring out and strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. Celebration of the Scrutinies is meant to be a community event and a reminder to all of us that even though we may have already received our sacraments, we too are expected to self-search and repent during this Lenten season.

Our elect include:

Tiffany Bevan, Anne Cronister, Shannon Goodearl,
Amanda Miles, Rachel Miles, Shelli Maher,
Jorge Oropeza, Cathy Simonson,
Lorena Velasco, Kristen Vers, Amy Lynn Carlson,
Cathy Lesser, Clive Camelo, Laura Nelson,
Diana Rollins and Sandra Nelson.

Pictures and prayer cards are in the vestibule of the Church next to the Reconciliation Room. Please take a card and pray for that person as we all journey together through Lent toward Easter.

MEMORIAL EASTER FLOWERS

Easter flowers will decorate the Church during the Easter Season. If you would care to make a donation of $10 towards their purchase in memory of a loved one, please fill out the form below and return it to the Parish Office by April 3rd. A memorial list will be published in the bulletin. Please make check payable to St. Robert's, Easter Flower Fund.
