To the Church of St. Robert's
from the Church of Ephesus

In the style of St. Paul's letters to the Ephesians, I was thinking of writing to you, as I stood at some of the locations where St. Paul spoke in Ephesus and Athens and other ports of call in the Greek and Turkish islands. It was awe inspiring for my wife, some relatives and myself, as we visited some of these ancient wonders of the world. We visited, Hagia Sophia, a magnificent orthodox church in Istanbul, with ancient icons made of thousands of hand painted pieces. We visited the ruins of some ancient cities, destroyed by volcanoes and earthquakes some 2000 to 3000 years before the birth of Christ. We ended up our vacation in the grandeur of Sicily and Malta.

One of the most interesting cultural sightings was in the Greek isles with its large number of small chapels dotting the countryside. I was told that the people, who could afford to, would build a small chapel to Mary or a favorite saint next to their homes. They would decorate these chapels with an altar, beautiful icons, candles and flowers. One day a year, on the feast of the saint was the only time the chapel was open to the public.

As I was sailing, I couldn't help but wonder, what people were going to say about our nation, our culture, and our symbols of faith a thousand years from now. As I arrived in Malta, I prayed a prayer of thanksgiving for not sharing St. Paul's experience of being shipwrecked.

Even though I totally enjoy seeing the wonders of the world, it's always great to come home to St. Robert's.
