Dear Parishioners:

A Catholic Parish is made up of people, people who believe in God and in the Church. It is made up of people who believe they are called not just to grow in their own Faith but also are called to serve others. Our Parish has been served in a special way by two such people - individuals of Faith, individuals of service.

One is Sister Ita Cleary of the Presentation Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Since her arrival at St. Robert's in 1970, sister has served as a teacher in the school, as Director of Religious Education, and in recent years as Pastoral Associate for the Sick and Homebound. More important she has been a faithful friend and minister to all. Sister is retiring this summer. After a vacation with her family in Ireland, she will return to St. Robert's and continue to share her faith and her joy with us. We are all grateful to Sister Ita for all she has done for the people of St. Robert's and we thank God that we will continue to be able to share her friendship in the years of her retirement.

Since 1998, Pat Vallez-Kelly has shared his Faith and his service with our Parish community. He has been the Pastoral Associate for Liturgy. The title sounds simple but the ministry calls for a multitude of talents from knowledge of the liturgical and musical traditions of the church to the intricacies of leading a choir. It has meant many meetings, climbing of ladders to decorate the church, and helping families plan the music for weddings and funerals. In all these many tasks, Pat has served with a smile and with a firm Faith in God and in the church. The Parish is grateful. As he moves on to new challenges, Pat and his wife Theresa hope to remain an active part of our Parish family.

There will be farewell for Sister Ita and for Pat next Sunday after 7:30a.m and 9:30 a.m. Mass in Hennessy Hall. I hope that many of you will stop by to say thank you. After the 5:00 p.m. Mass this Sunday, there will be another opportunity to say thank you to Pat.

In September, Sister Patricia O'Sullivan, P.B.V.M. and Sister Sheryl Marshal, OSF will be joining our Parish staff.

Sincerely,
Father Ring

A couple of years ago, Fr. Jan Michael Joncas (composer of "On Eagle's Wings") spoke at a conference. He said something like this,

"A community will never sing much
if it does not have something to sing about,
and a community that has something to sing about
you will never be able to keep from singing."

What he says about singing is really applicable to all of our liturgical celebrations. We could just as easily say, "A community (or person) that has something to celebrate you will never be able to keep from celebrating."

As I wrap up my full-time service at St. Robert's, my prayer is that, beyond the struggles and mechanics of doing liturgy well, we will always believe that we have something to sing about and something to celebrate—namely, the presence of God among us in the Flesh and in Spirit. - Pat Vallez-Kelly

ANNUAL APPEAL

ann_appl.gif (54325 bytes)

A NOTE FROM FATHER RING

Dear Parishioners,

"We are the Church" is a truth we often forget. However, it cannot be separated from the truth that the Pope is the visible source and foundation both of the bishops and of the community of the faithful throughout the world. It is also cannot be separated from the truth that the bishop is the visible source and foundation of unity in the local Church. We show our unity with our local bishop, Archbishop Levada, by helping him in every way we can in seeing to the well being of the church of the Archdiocese of San Francisco which is made up of the Counties of Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo. One way we do this is by helping support the many ministries of the Archdiocese - from outreach to prisoners, the sick and the elderly to the training of future priests, deacons and laity. My hope is that we, the people of St. Robert's Parish, will show our unity by making generous donations to the Annual Appeal of the Archbishop. Already 350 families have given $67,701 from the treasure that God has given them. Please join them. In this way, we show that we are truly the members of universal Church. As you know, our goal this year is $80,200. With your help, we will be able to reach it.

Sincerely,
Father Ring
