The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Dear Friends,

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Body and Blood of our Lord. Some years ago we called it "Corpus Christi", and many of us still remember it as that. It is a beautiful feast that used to be celebrated as a Holyday with processions of the Blessed Sacrament. Because we no longer have that Holyday we may think that the feast is no longer important. We now celebrate it on a Sunday when more people will have the opportunity of receiving the Lord in the Eucharist. Work schedules and the busy-ness of life made it difficult for people to get to Church on a weekday.

We remember our First Communion Day. How very special it was with family and friends rejoicing with us as we received Our Lord for the first time. Has our first fervor waned a little? Do we prepare for our Sunday Eucharist with the same enthusiasm as we did for our First Communion? Or sadly, do we not receive the Lord at all in the Eucharist? This may be a good time for us to renew our fervor and invite our friends to do the same.

In the Gospel we read that Jesus said to the people, "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood you will not have life in you." This was received with very mixed emotions. Some could not take it and walked away, but Jesus did not water it down. He meant what he said. We do not have to understand it but to accept it on Jesus’ word. We believe because he said it. Today would be a good day to ask the Lord to increase our faith.

Today is also Father’s Day. Every grace and blessing on all fathers. May your greatest gift to your children be a love for the Eucharist.

God bless you,
Sister Ita

"The Spirit at work among us"

Last week we looked at the words from four of the Eucharistic Prayers which we pray when we ask the Holy Spirit to sanctify and transform the gifts of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. There is also a point in most Eucharistic Prayers when we ask the Holy Spirit to bless and unify the people gathered and to form us into the Body of Christ:

Eucharistic Prayer II - "May all of us who share in the body and blood of Christ be brought together in unity by the Holy Spirit."

Eucharistic Prayer III - "Grant that we, who are nourished by his body and blood, may be filled with his Holy Spirit, and become one body, one spirit in Christ."

Eucharistic Prayer IV - "Lord, look upon this sacrifice which you have given to your Church; and by your Holy Spirit, gather all who share this one bread and one cup into the one body of Christ, a living sacrifice of praise."

Eucharistic Prayer for Masses with Children II - "Lord our God listen to our prayer. Send the Holy Spirit to all of us who share in this meal. May this Spirit bring us closer together in the family of the church. . . "

FYI . . . our little pentecostal contest proposed last month for song texts with the word "fire" in them came up blank. I didn’t receive any submissions. Sorry! The Spirit reveals that we all have better things to do!! - Pat Kelly
