Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

We begin the sacred season of Lent this Wednesday, February 25th. Masses for Ash Wednesday will be at 6:30, 8:30, 10:30 AM and 7:30 PM. Ashes will be distributed at the end of the Liturgy of the Word. Our theme this Lent is "OPENING THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT". Lent is a time to renew the grace - the Spirit - of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist within us. We promise once again to die to selfishness and sin (through our Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving) so that this year at Easter we may more completely rise to new life with Christ.

We are fortunate that we begin our Parish Mission this coming Sunday. Father Tom Allender of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) will be the preacher for the days of our Mission. This is a great opportunity for all of us to make our Faith relevant for our daily lives. So often it seems that our Faith life is separate from our family life. This week will help us to integrate the two. Please note the dates and the times of the Mission as listed in this bulletin and on the sign in the vestibule.

A REFLECTION FOR LENT

When you are rich,
when you have a name,
or when you are a member of a respected group,
you are never really oppressed.
When in difficulty,
only a phone call and everything is fixed up.

But when you have no friends,
when you are an immigrant and
you speak the language badly,
you are quickly oppressed,
for you cannot defend yourself.
This is true of the sick, the handicapped, prisoners,
and those who have no voice.

They are the oppressed ones,
and they are numerous in our society.
There are many without work,
with no security,
living off meager wages,
living day by day in unbearable situations.
Each of us has met them.
They are all around us.

But what is frightening is that the disciples of Jesus
are so frequently in comfort.
On which side of the road was Jesus?
On which side of the road are his disciples?

                    (Jean Vanier, Followers of Jesus)

Sincerely,
Fr. Ring

ASH WEDNESDAY

Ash Wednesday falls this year on the 25th, in the middle of our Mission. On Ash Wednesday, the blessing and giving of ashes takes place in the middle of Mass. Masses on Ash Wednesday: 6:30, 8:30, and 10:30 AM and 7:30 PM.

LENT REGULATIONS

ABSTINENCE: Everyone fourteen years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on ASH WEDNESDAY, the FRIDAYS of Lent and GOOD FRIDAY.

FAST: Everyone eighteen years of age and older but under the age of sixty is also bound to fast on ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY.

On these two days, the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.

When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinece, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.
