Dear Parishioners and Students of St. Robert’s School

I would like to thank each of you for the wonderful reception on the occasion of my retirement from St. Robert School. Your beautiful cards, letters and gifts touched me deeply, and I am honored and humbled by your generosity.

St. Robert’s is truly an outstanding community and I look back on my 25 years at St. Roberts as one of God’s many blessings in my life. Working with you and the students of St. Robert’s, past and present, has been a privilege and a joy, and I will always treasure your gifts of love, friendship and support.

I wish each of you God’s blessings in the new school year, and always.

With love and gratitude,
Patricia Bordin

Dear Parishioners,

Thank you to all who attended and helped make my Installation a great success last Sunday. I look forward to our future years together as a Parish community.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Our Holy Father has said: “Through adoration, the faithful can enjoy a particular experience of ‘abiding’ in the love of Christ, entering even more deeply into his filial relationship with the Father….Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of love. Let’s not be stingy with our time to go meet Him in faith-filled adoration and in contemplation full of faith.” We have the opportunity of worshipping Jesus in His blessed sacrament on Saturday, September 4th, and on every first Saturday of each month, following the 8:30 am Mass and continuing until Benediction at 10 am. Come! Receive the peace only Jesus can give!

LIKE TO SING? LIKE TO EAT?
THEN JOIN US FOR A CHOIR POTLUCK

The choir is planning a beginning of the year party to be held Sun., Sept. 12th, from 1-3 p.m. at Hennessy Hall. There will be food and music. This will be a chance to welcome anyone interested in singing or playing for any of the liturgies. There is no need to bring anything but yourselves. The choirs will supply all the food and may have a few musical surprises.

The Adult Choir singing at the 9:30 a.m. Mass is ready to begin a new year raising their voices in praise. You don’t need to be a ‘professional' singer, but simply someone who enjoys singing and has a willingness to praise God in song. Rehearsals are every Wed. from 7-9 p.m., and our first rehearsal will be on Wed., Sept. 8th. We are going to be rehearsing music for Advent and Christmas soon, and would love to invite new members to help us make these seasons truly joyous! On Sunday, we gather at 9 a.m. to warm up prior to the 9:30 a.m. Mass.

Although we would welcome you to join us throughout the year, if you can not make that commitment, we would be happy for your to sing for Nov. and Dec. in preparation for Christmas. We are going to be planning a midnight mass with much beautiful and festive music.

I would also like to to invite any in our congregation who play instruments to come join us. We are always looking for instrumentalists to help accompanying the choir or play for any of the liturgies.

For more information, or to join us contact Kevin Imbimbo, or just come by the organ and see me after Mass. Even if you’re not sure if you can sing with us, we still want to see you on Sept. 12th after the 11:30 a.m. Mass for FOOD AND FUN!

SCRIPTURE STUDY

The Wednesday evening Scripture Study will resume on Wed. Sept. 8th at 7:30 p.m. in the Convent chapel. We will study the books of Revelation.

All are welcome. For more information call Sister Ita at 583-2544.

ROBERT'S READERS

"Home to Harmony" by Philip Gulley is the newest book for the Robert's Readers. This is a delightful book about a Quaker pastor, Sam Gardner, and the town of Harmony. The author Philip Gulley is, himself, a Quaker minister, and this book grew out of essays that Gulley wrote for his church newsletter. The San Mateo library system has seven copies, so it is readily available. We will be discussing this book Tuesday, September 21st, at 7pm in Mary’s Chapel. If you have any questions, please call Colleen Soracco.

THE FESTIVAL IS COMING!!!

Plans are being made for this years annual parish festival “La Fiesta”, which will be on September 24-26, and as always the Barbecue and Food Booths are in need of your help. Several people are needed to work in these two very popular booths and everyone from the parish is welcome to help. Most shifts are for 2 hours, but you can work for as many hours as you would like and on all three days if you wish.

The menu will include those all time favorites-delicious barbecued tri tip steak sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, polish sausages, Domino’s Pizza, nachos, soft drinks, candy and much more.

If you can help in any way, please contact Louise and Ray Downs or Raquel and Jeff Downs.

Thank You

Ready, Set...

Whether or not we have children in school, now that school has started, we'll all be getting back into our usual routines. We might want to take advantage of this "new year" to set up a new routine for ourselves, different from our usual routine. As we think back over the past year, are there some things we'd like to change? Did we find ourselves way too overcommitted and then were unable to change gears midstream? Did I want to get more involved in the parish, but let my shyness or past hurts keep me from volunteering? Do I need to work as much as I do? If we cut back some on our spending, could one of us spend more time with the family? How often have we gone out as a couple? Are our children doing everything they want to do -sports, music, dance lessons -so much so that they aren't learning the importance of decision-making and we find ourselves run ragged by endless driving? Has it been ages since I saw friends who aren't members of our parish?

If you could choose to put the aspects of your life together in a different configuration, what would you like to do differently this coming year? It's so easy for any of us to get in a rut and unthinkingly repeat a daily rhythm which leads to short-tempers and high blood pressure. Why not, take a few minutes sitting in the church or in a park and ask the Spirit to help you review your schedule? John's gospel, has Jesus say: "I have come that [you] may have life, life to the full." Sometimes, we've tried to pack so much into our days we forfeit the opportunity to enjoy the life God is offering us. Let us begin again to live at a human pace, smelling the roses, appreciating our children and grandchildren, and thanking God for the gift of another day of life. "Just to be is a blessing, just to live is holy." Abraham Joshua Heschel

The Sunday Readings

If you've found the Sunday readings difficult to understand sometimes and are free Tuesday mornings, you're most welcome to join the Scripture group which meets from 9:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Mary's Chapel. It's helpful to read the readings beforehand, but that's not essential. I try to give some background to the readings and we talk about how to live the values presented and issues in the Church today related to situations in the readings. We'll meet every Tuesday, but you are free to come when you can. If you have questions, please call me at 650-589-2800.

Women's Retreat Day

Our retreat day for the wome of the parish is scheduled for Mercy Center on Saturday, November 13. If you came last year, you'll remember what an uplifting day it was. If you weren't able to participate, please talk to someone who did and then put it on your calendar. We'll meet from 8:30 to 3 pm with lunch included. More infonnation will be forthcoming.
