PARISH BULLETIN

Fourth Sunday of Lent

Dear Parishioners:

Our Lenten journey is moving along. We are a little beyond the halfway mark to Easter. The Scripture readings during this fourth week of Lent focus on the theme of light and the importance of walking in the light of faith. Today’s gospel story of the man born blind teaches us the need to have our eyes opened to see the way as Jesus sees it. We are told that the man was blind from birth. Imagine what it must be like to be totally blind and then see. Most of us, praise God, have good physical sight; but nonetheless, spiritually, we may be blind in many areas.

At the heart of this gospel story, is Jesus’ desire to help us see. He invites us to trust Him that He will dispell the darkness of our fears, our anxieties, or whatever it is that sometimes threaten to overcome us.

The remaining weeks of Lent might be a good time to take a break from busy schedules to reflect on those areas of blindness and darkness in our lives. Deciding to participate in one of the Lenten Reconciliation Services coming up at church is a good way to bring healing and peace to our hearts. There is also an urgent call this Lent to pray and reflect about how contemporary society and our war-torn world needs to walk out of darkness into the light of hope and peace.

As I write this bulletin letter I am mindfull of our Confirmation Candidates who will be doing their day of retreat this Saturday, March 9th. Let us, as a parish community, pray for them that they continue to grow strong in their faith and in their commitment to Jesus.

Blessings,
Sister Mary

STATIONS OF THE CROSS AND LENTEN SUPPERS

You are invited to participate in the three Lenten disciplines: PRAYER, FASTING AND ALMSGIVING, each Friday during Lent. Stations are held in our Church at 6:00 p.m., followed by a light Lenten supper in Hennessy Hall. The supper on March 15th will be hosted by the Grownups. We ask that you donate what you would have spent on Friday dinner to our St. Vincent de Paul Society, that they may help our sisters and brothers in need. If you are a newcomer to St. Robert’s, this is a good way to meet other members of our parish family.

Jesus said to us: I have called you by name.

"In the Midst of Trial"

Every once in a while, a phrase from the liturgy really speaks to me. I remember that in college, the phrase was "Thy will be done." Lately, I am struck by the phrase from the Eucharistic Prayer, "He gave you thanks and praise." I have been inspired by this phrase, because I realize that Jesus gave God thanks and praise on the night before his death. In the midst of trial he gave God thanks and praise. Perhaps he did so because it was the common Jewish practice to bless God and remember God’s providence at every meal. But it was also especially an expression of faith and trust by Jesus, because he said these things knowing that great pain and suffering were just around the corner. In fact, his heart was already troubled. In the midst of his trial, he gave God thanks and praise.

God has called us by name to this level of trust. God has called us by name to this kind of attitude. This is one of the ways we give witness to our faith—that when the dark hour approaches, (or even when we’re just a little overstressed!), we are willing and able to give thanks and praise to God. This is the way that Jesus showed us. This is the way we pass in God’s arms through big and little deaths to new life. Pat Vallez-Kelly

Special Note: Next week , the 5th Sunday of Lent falls on March 17th. However, don’t expect a St. Patrick’s Day mass and celebration on that day. In the Church calendar, the Lenten Sunday takes precedence and is a more important observance. Liturgically, we will celebrate the Solemnity of St. Patrick the Bishop on Monday, March 18th. St. Patrick is a principal co-patron saint (along with St. Francis) of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. That’s why we celebrate his memorial as a solemn feast day.

LENTEN ANOINTING MASS

At Noon today the Sacrament of the Sick will be celebrated. All who are seriously ill in mind, body or in spirit and all who are experiencing the affects of the aging process are invited to come before the Priest as he lays hands on them. Jesus has said to each of us: I HAVE CALLED YOU BY NAME! In this Sacrament we become more closely united to Chrit’s suffering. He gives us His strength, eace and the courage to overcome the difficulties of illness and pain. While the congregation prays silently for their recovery, the Priest will anoint each with oil.

AMERICAN BISHOPS OVERSEAS APPEAL NEXT SUNDAY

When we contemplate the face of Jesus we can see the faces of the men and women of today, especially those who are suffering and in need. The work of the agencies involved in the Church’s international social ministry serve "Jesus in disguise" and manifests our Catholic Christian call to action for the least among us without consideration of borders and origins.

The America Bishops’ Overseas Appeal next week’s second collection—helps fund the work of Catholic Relief Services, the Holy Father’s Relief Fund, and the U.S. Bishop’s Migration and Refugee Services and international peace and justice programs. Your support of American Bishops’ Overseas Appeal is an important step in expressing solidarity with the poor, the oppressed, the refugee, the migrant worker, and other disadvantaged and powerless people in whom we find Jesus and come to know. home.

Human Cloning-Some people want to use cloning to produce live-born children who are "copies" of living or deceased people. Others would use it to mass-produce human embryos to be destroyed in medical research. The Human Cloning Prohibition Act (S. 1899, H.R. 2505) will ban human cloning for either purposes. The U.S. House of Representatives has already passed H.R. 2505. That measure or its Senate companion, S. 1899, awaits a Senate vote. President Bush says he will sign the Act into law. Please write to Senator Feinstein and Boxer to support this legislation. For more information consult. U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on cloning: www.usccb.org/prolife/issues/bioethic.
