Dear Parishioners:

Remember when you were young, and you put your nickel in the candy machine, and so many sweet tarts poured out of the little chute that you had to use both hands to hold them all? If you’re lucky, maybe something similar has happened to you recently in front of a slot machine in Reno or Las Vegas. Abundance. . . . what do we do with it?

St. Robert’s Children’s Choir is overflowing our small choir corner these days. It’s early in the season, but we have more students in the choir than ever before. We have more older students, more students from our religious education classes, and more boys. We have an abundantly talented new director, Ms. Aura Baldomero, who is helping to make it happen. I see this young choir as a great sign of life being lived to the full here at St. Robert’s. I sing this abundance!

Sr. Ita’s Boutique will be full of crafts and perfect little gifts again this year. It’s taking place next weekend in Hennessey Hall. All of the items to be sold are donated or made by generous people who have given from the abundance of their time, talent, and treasure. They have a little extra to share with those who could really benefit from it. We share our abundance.

Two weeks ago, a small group from our TeeN CLuB came early for Mass to decorate the Church for the celebration. They really did a great job! Last week, nearly 80 young men and women stood before the assembly at the 5:30 Mass and professed that they will do what it takes to prepare well for the Sacrament of Confirmation. I’m noticing good fruit in our youth ministry and teen community. It is like a tree that is being watered well and that is getting good sun. God is blessing us with this abundance.

It’s harvest time. We have an abundance, and yet there will be more people this year than in recent years who do not feel so blessed. More than ever, "those who have" are going to be called upon to share with "those who have not." In whichever category you see yourself, don’t worry. Be responsible with what has been given to you, but also trust in God’s abundance and goodness.

Pat Kelly

Eucharist and Social Justice

Last week, Fr. John Coleman’s article, "How the Eucharist Proclaims Social Justice" showed us that the Eucharist is a type of meal, hosted by God, which by its very nature demands that we show radical hospitality and acknowledge the equality of each other "despite race, wealth, social class, and gender." This week, we’ll look at the way the sacrificial nature of the Eucharist proclaims, teaches, and nurtures social justice:

EUCHARIST IS THE REDEMPTIVE SACRIFICE, THE NEW COVENANT IN CHRIST’S BLOOD

The eucharistic meal is no less a remembrance and reenactment of the redemptive sacrifice in Christ’s blood, who died for "the many." A pious Jew in the tradition of the prophets, Jesus knew well that sacrifice evoked the words of the Israelite prophets who inveighed against irrelevant and empty sacrifices. He knew such passages as this one, in which God wants obedience of the heart:

What are your endless sacrifices to me, says Yahweh. ....Bring me your worthless offerings no more, the smoke of them fills me with disgust. You may multiply your prayers, I shall not listen. Your hands are covered with blood, wash, make yourselves clean. Take your wrongdoing out of my sight, cease to do evil, learn to do good, search for justice, help the oppressed, be just to the orphan, plead for the widow (Isaiah 1:11-17).

Justice is the true sacrifice God desires.

...Jesus’ sacrifice calls us to remember his compassion for the poor and widows, his feeding of the hungry, his own open table fellowship with outcasts and persons who were scorned. God and do likewise ("Do this in memory of me"), Jesus tells us, as we share in this new redemptive covenant in his blood.

RESPECT LIFE BANNER

To the left of our sanctuary, you will see a banner with a red rose imprinted upon it. The rose symbolizes God’s gift of life to us. It is a reminder that human life, at all its stages, is precious and deserves respect. October is designated as Respect Life Month. For these 31 days, our banner will help us to affirm the goodness of God’s creation by valuing the unborn; providing for the poor; rooting out the cause of violence and war; ending the death penalty and protecting the elderly, infirmed and terminally ill. We pray that God will give us the strength and wisdom to love life.

RESPECT LIFE MONTH

LIFE WILL TRIUMPH...This is a sure hope for us. YES, LIFE WILL TRIUMPH because truth, goodness, joy and true progress are on the side of life. God, who loves life and gives it generously, is on the side of life.

(Pope John Paul II to the Pontifical Academy for life, March 3, 2001).
